We are just finishing a unit on the family.  This includes learning the names of family members.  Learning about possesives.  Learning the Spanish system of last names.  As well as learning some professions, mostly cognates or very common professions.

We also have to bring back some past learning.  How do you say where your from or how old you are? (Now that we're dealing with family we expand our numbers to 100).  We also have to review ser and estar for describing people and the great trickster verb gustar for saying what is pleasing to us.

This is always a tricky unit because I have so many students with disfunctional families.  Even talking about naming I cannot ask students to give me their "Spanish names" because they don't know their mother's maiden name or they don't know who their father is.  I have to work off of artists they care about for connection.

They do a final project presenting a family (real or imagined).  It's always fun to see what they come up with.  When it's the real family it's a pleasure to get that personal insight.  But even when it isn't is reveals things about the kids.
